Well...the Northwestern most point of the Lower 48 in the United States anyway. Yesterday, I took a long day trip out to Cape Flattery. From where I live that is about 144 miles, but is about a 4.5 hour drive because of the long winding roads to the tip of the peninsula. The road is frequently lush with the trees aligning the road with ocasional peek-a-boo views of the water.
The Cape Flattery Trail hike is an easy 1.2 out and back trip trail with a slight incline on the way back from the view point. Yesterday, the trail was muddy and more crowded than I expected for a Wednesday. I can't imagine how crowded it gets on a Summer weekend. The hardest part about it being crowded is when the trail narrows to the boardwalks. I love the boardwalks, but it make it difficult for two people to pass in different directions at the same time.
This trip has been on my mind for several months now. I will definitely be back in the future since it is a great location for spotting rare/uncommon birds for Washington. Yesterday, I challenged myself to do it in one day, but it was a lot of driving and it didn't really allow any time for side trips (so I didn't try for the Bar-Tailed Godwit spotted recently near by).
